I’m constantly reminded by my inspiring students as to how daunting the process of surrendering can be.
It’s natural to struggle with surrendering to whatever arises in your practice as it can be very scary to let that mental clutter go. This is the material we have built our lives around, giving us security, identity, and power, or so we think. We fear to let go because without all of it…who the hell am I?
Trapped emotional trauma manifests on a physical level in our bodies holding all the pain from the landscape of our lives. This is why emotions like anxiety, anger or grief are felt at specific physical locations. Even after the situation has passed our bodies hold onto the memories until we let them go. Certain asanas/poses can bring a surge of emotion as stored energies are unblocked and released. It’s a necessary part of the process in order to stop clinging to what no longer serves us.
I know only too well how scary this process can be – believe me, there is nothing you’re going through in the practice that I haven’t already been through myself! I always feel so privileged to hold the space for students when the process of surrendering arises for them. All that is required is to simply do your practice, surrender, and trust in the deeply transformative process of Ashtanga yoga.
Also, there are a few spaces left on the January weekend retreat for anyone that fancies a nourishing kick start to the New Year (see details below.)
There’s been a lot of interest in renting the Shala. Ideally, I’m looking for someone to rent the space on weekends and/or outside of our regular class schedule during the week – pass on the word!
Just a gentle reminder that all the evening classes now start at 5.30pm to facilitate those of you that would like an earlier start time.
See you at the shala,
