Teaching Ashtanga yoga in its pure unadulterated form has been my passion for over a decade and it continues to inspire me, even more, each day! There’s nothing quite like holding the space for people of all ages and levels from complete beginners to experienced teachers. It always inspires me to see people rolling out their mats regardless of their level of strength or flexibility.
Ashtanga yoga is often misunderstood as a purely physical practice. Once understood and practiced correctly it is a deeply healing practice. We’re all craving that inner happiness and peace but it seems so out of reach for many people. Ashtanga is a very precise and systematic practice. There is nowhere to hide. Hence, when understood and used correctly, Ashtanga is a sharp tool to help us nourish the body, mind, and soul. All you need is a willingness to tap into the true vision of yoga i.e. ‘chitta vritti nirodah’ ‘calming the fluctuations of the mind.’ It’s not some esoteric and unattainable goal. The asanas are tools to enable us to use our bodies and the subtleties of our breath to develop a steady mind. All you need to do is to show up on your mat and do what your schedule allows for. Some Ashtanga is always better than no Ashtanga!
If you would like a refresher in the basic fundamentals of the practice or would like to start from the very beginning, I’ll be teaching an Introductory Workshop next Saturday, October 7th from 10am-12pm. It also includes a month of classes to get you started (see below for booking details.)
There’s been a lot of interest in the New Year Weekend Retreat from January 19th-21st. It’s the perfect opportunity for you to take time to yourself away from the chaos of the outside world and to tune inwards. Our weekend will consist of morning mysore style classes, afternoon workshops, walks in beautiful nature and evening guided meditation classes. We’ll also have our amazing chef Siobhan providing us with her delicious organic vegetarian food. There are more details below as it’s filling up quickly – treat yourself!
Don’t forget that it’s a moon day this Thursday, October 5th, hence no morning mysore class, enjoy your lie-ins! Otherwise, it’s morning and evening classes as usual – I’m now teaching all the classes and looking forward to seeing you at the Shala…
